Cannabis Tourism In California, After Prop. 64

0If prop 64 (the adult us of marijuana act) passes, in California this November, parts of it will take effect immediately. Adults 21 and over will be able to possess up to one ounce of buds, or 8 grams of concentrate, share with other adults and transport those amounts away from their homes. The remainder of the act will take time to practically take effect as regulations are drafted, licenses are given out and cannabis is actually grown.

Tourism is a big part of California’s economy. The reasons people visit California today will remain; natural wonders, rivers, surfing, skiing, Yosemite, Disneyland, Hollywood, the list goes on. How cannabis consumption will fit and how soon rules, both legal and practical, will be developed, remains to be seen. Will hotels, motels, bed and breakfast places and the like allow consumption?  Where will consumption be allowed? Public consumption will be a ticketable offense, but ultimately establishments will be allowed to have consumption, along with sales. Where these establishments will be allowed will depend on the local jurisdiction since a local permit will be required. How close these establishments will be to major tourist attractions remains to be seen.

Prop 64 allows for vertical integration of cultivation, manufacturing and retailing, like a winery. It also allows for adults to consume, with appropriate permits, on vehicles of transport, so long as the driver is separated from hot boxing. As these micro businesses get up and running, tourism will include visits to try their wares. Transporting adults to tourist attractions can include consuming during transport. Once permitted, the roadways will be open as the busses travel through areas that might not allow such things.

An interesting potential will exist for things like cannabis consumption at weddings and other types of adult parties. Alcohol will not be allowed to be dispensed in close proximity to cannabis dispensing, but the rules around this are yet to be developed. Events like music concerts will be interesting as demand exists, and actually occurs, at concerts and alcohol is also available. How this will play out remains to be seen.

California’s tourism industry is huge and will only get bigger as tourists are allowed to legally obtain, and consume, cannabis on their visits. This will be marketed around the world as California moves adults out of the dark ages of cannabis prohibition and into a new era of adult use.
