I have been doing quite a bit of research, over the last few weeks, and have come across some really great cannabis brands. Some are from states, where cannabis is already recreationally legal, so they are set up to offer products to recreational and medical consumers. However, some are just emerging from the medical industry into the recreational industry. Below you will find my top 5 brands to watch in 2017:
Dixie Elixirs came on the scene in 2010 and immediately took off with a bang. According to their website, they believe “that cannabis is powerful, that quality is important and that accurate dosing is everything” and have established themselves “as the trusted source for innovative, safe, effective and delicious cannabis products”. They handcraft every one, of their products, with pure CO2 extracted THC and triple test every product they sell. It is quite clear that Dixie prides themselves in high-quality products.
Another area that is clearly important to Dixie is education. Their Marijuana 101 page has everything you need to know about use in Colorado . Additionally, they offer an awesome page on consumption methods called Marijuana Delivery Systems. I found both pages to be informative and helpful.
The real excitement, though, is all around their thoughtfully created product line. Of course, Dixie offers their elixirs in many flavors including Berry Lemonade, Cherry Limeade, Fruit Punch, Half & Half (Lemonade Tea) and Root Beer. However, they also have a line of 7 candy bars, a line of sublinguals called Synergy and another in various flavors called Mints, a line of infused capsules called Scrips, a single-serving energy shot called Lift, a topical line with balms, lotion and bath soak and a disposable vape pen line. I highly recommend any of these products if you are in Colorado, Washington or California and watch for their expansions into other cannabis-friendly states.
A recent addition, to the California cannabis market, is Lord Jones. Their site indicates that they “manufacture and distribute the world’s finest cannabis infused products” and I might have to agree. Lord Jones “confections are made by hand in small batches from single origin Ecuadorian dark chocolate, imported natural European fruit essences and pure California-grown cannabis extract”. As for their topicals, they “have been developed by a veteran team of personal care experts to deliver full-spectrum whole plant medicine that provides relief from pain, inflammation and a variety of skin conditions”.
Lord Jones topical skin lotions come in 2 sizes and they are specifically made to harness what their site calls The Entourage Effect. It goes on to describe this concept in this way. “Scientists believe that when cbd and thc are combined, the result is greater than any single cannabinoid used in isolation, a phenomenon they describe as the “Entourage Effect.” They have developed the Lord Jones formulas “to harness the “Entourage Effect” using the finest sourced ingredients”.
Lord Jones edible line is just as snazzy, and well made, aswell. Their Dark Chocolate Covered Sea Salt Caramels are handmade and come in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg individual dosage per piece. The All Natural Old Fashioned Gum Drops come in flavors such as wild strawberry, mango, blueberry, lemon, blood orange, peach, apricot and passion fruit and are available in 5mg, 10mg or 20mg individual dosage per piece. Finally, the Single Serve Dark Chocolate Espresso Chews are available in 15mg Indica or Sativa individual doses. I believe that we will see Lord Jones take off, with several additional products, in 2017 and is absolutely a company to pay attention to.
KIVA has become a mainstay, in the California cannabis market, due, mostly, to what High Times Magazine calls their “contemporary branding, natural kraft paper stock, beautifully integrated color coded tamper evident labels and those classic candy tins that inspire trust and confidence in the products and the brand”. As with many California cannabis brands, KIVA is technically still a California based non-profit collective. This will likely change though, as KIVA seems to be set-up to enter the recreational market in a position to compete with many of the larger veteran companies.
The KIVA Bars are what launched the company and it is easy to see why. They are of the utmost quality, great tasting and are offered in “single strength milk and dark chocolate, or four triple strength flavors for your enjoyment”. Flavors include Ginger Dark Chocolate, Vanilla Chai Milk Chocolate, Tangerine Dark Chocolate and Blackberry Dark Chocolate.
KIVA’s first non-chocolate confection is their Petra Mints. These mints are a lighter dose, coming in 2.5mg of THC, and are offered in the flavors of Moroccan Mint and Eucalyptus.
Another product, offered by KIVA, is their Terra Bites. These little balls of goodness are a blend of chocolate and coffee flavors and officially come in Espresso Dark Chocolate and Blueberry Milk Chocolate.
KIVA’s final product is fairly new and perfect for the up-and-coming recreational cannabis industry. Kiva Minis are individually wrapped squares and come in all of the flavors of the KIVA Bars. So happy to see a California company embracing the low-dose concept. These guys are a force and we will see more of them in the years to come.
Auntie Dolores has been making infused gourmet products, in San Francisco, since 2008. They believe in cannabis, superfoods, the gourmet experience and responsible consumption. Auntie Dolores is environmentally focused and have taken the lead on self-regulation. All of these qualities lead me to believe that they will not be going away anytime soon.
Auntie Dolores’s products include both savory and sweet, which makes them unique in the edibles game. The savory products include Glazed Pecans, Chili Lime Peanuts and Mini Cheese Biscuits and all seem to be either vegan or gluten-free. The sweet products include Caramel Corn, Toffee Brownie Bites and Chocolate Chip Cookie Bites and are all are unbelievably yummy.
In addition to the sweet and savory products, offered by Auntie Dolores, they also offer CBD only options such as their CBD Chocolate Brownie. Additionally, Auntie Dolores offers CBD capsules and a CBD Superfood Truffles.
I expect to see this company make some moves to be a recognized edible company in the recreational cannabis world and I’m excited to see where it will lead.
Our last brand, to watch, is another California company called Lola Lola. This company came onto the market, in 2015, and immediately became the talk of the town based upon their unique packaging. Colorful, whimsical and overall just fun, there are drawings of animals, including a shark jumping rope and an elephant with wings like a bird. However, this company is more than just a pretty face. Lola Lola is all about delivering experiences that inspire expansion of the mind, community and overall well being of humankind.
Lola Lola’s product line, for now, includes pre-rolls (as seen above), which come in boxes of 3 rolls per box. Their other product line is absolutely amazing and adorable, to me, because it is an extracts line that comes in a cute little jar with a heart-shaped piece of shatter in the bottom. I love how thoughtful this company is in their attention to detail and how they strive to set themselves apart from other companies. For these reasons, I predict that Lola Lola will be another company to do big things in 2017.
So there you have it, my top 5 cannabis companies to watch in 2017. I encourage you to take a look at their sites, learn about their missions and try their products. Until next time….
